It's also quick and easy to make and a fun meal for sharing.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 Heads Romaine Lettuce
  • 1 Block Firm Tofu (454g)
  • 6-8 Mushrooms (I used Button, but Cremini or Shitake would be great too)
  • 1 Carrot
  • 1/2 Medium Onion
  • 1-2 Red Chilis
  • 3-4 Cloves Garlic
  • 2″ of Ginger (21g)
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cinnamon

Sauce:

  • 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Hoisin
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • 1 Tsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
Possible Garnishes:
  • Cilantro
  • Green Onions
  • Crushed Peanuts
  • Lime

Step 1

  • Place a non-stick pan on med-high heat.
  • Add 1 Tbsp of oil.

Step 2

  • Shred your tofu using a grater.
  • Add to the pan once hot.
  • Add a 1/4 Tsp salt or to taste.
  • Add a pinch of pepper.
  • Mix gently so the tofu doesn’t break up too much.
  • You should start to see the tofu  develop crispy bits (see fourth picture). – Should take 5 minutes. Complete step 3 in the meantime.

Step 3

  • As the tofu is cooking, slice the mushrooms into matchstick like pieces to match the texture of the tofu.
  • Reduce heat to a medium and add to the tofu once it has developed some crispy bits. 
  • Cover with a lid. This will allow the tofu to absorb all the flavors from the mushrooms.

Step 4

  • As the tofu and mushrooms are mingling, mince:
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1-2 Red Chilis
  • 3-4 Garlic Cloves
  • 2″ of Ginger (21g)
  • Add the ingredients to the pan.
  • Add a 1/4 tsp of of salt (or to taste)
  • A pinch of pepper and a pinch of cinnamon (1/16 tsp)
  • Stir and cover with lid.

Step 5

  • Mix together all the ingredients for the sauce in a ramekin or bowl:
  • 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Hoisin Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • 1 Tsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
  • Add to the pan, stir, and cover with lid.

Step 6

  • Shred that carrot up.
  • Add to the pan, stir, cover with lid and turn off the heat.
  • We’re only steaming the carrot to give the dish an added crunch.
  • Taste the final mixture for seasoning.

Final Step!

  • Breakoff some pieces of lettuce. Give them a quick rinse and dry them off.
  • Setup some lettuce on a plate.
  • Scoop some of the tasty filling onto the wraps.
  • Top with a little hoisin sauce.
  • Add some crushed peanuts.
  • Add some sliced green onion or cilantro.
  • Top with some lime for a little zing!
